AJ's Ale House NB 9/27/13

Mikey Gammon and I started our night in New Braunfels, Texas tonight at 9PM to only a few people at the back of the bar. Eight people turned into 12, 12 people turned into 16, and by 9:45, the bar was packed! Everyone sang along to the songs that they requested, and I had a good time performing another great show with Mikey!

AJ's Ale House NB 9/26/13

Fun times at AJ's tonight, with lotsa list requests. By list requests, I mean, one request form with about ten songs listed on it! I made it though as many as I could, but honestly, there were so many songs listed just in the first half-hour of my show that I could've stopped taking requests right then and still played an extra hour just to get to them all. Everyone had a good time, and I'll be back tomorrow night for more!

Superfly's 9/26/13

My favorite parts of tonight's in-store performance at my favorite record shop in San Marcos, Texas was Kevin's dog, Sadie, sing-along every time Troy would play harmonica. We played all the hits, and people danced and clapped along. I hope to see everybody again next week at Superfly's!

AJ's Ale House NB 9/21/13

Joe Resnick and I were in perfect sync tonight at AJ's in New Braunfels, TX. We wowed the crowd and earned their respect by playing about 95% of the tunes laid on the piano. Everything from Madonna to John Denver to Nirvana to Ray Charles was requested, and we played them all. The house was packed from about the first ten minutes of our show until the very end, and we left them chanting for more! I was even tipped tonight with a room key to a local hotel with the room number on the request form. I love my wife very much, and I decided that it was best to not find out who that person was. Is it bad that my first thought was "axe murderer" and not "romantic encounter"? Anyway, it was a great show, and the piano/drum vibe was really kickin' tonight. Joe is such a solid player and good guy, and it was my pleasure to perform another show with him tonight!

Outlaw Rays 9/20/13

Today, I was sitting on my couch, enjoying the much-needed rainstorm when I received a call asking if I could fill in for a player (trapped in an airport due to the rain) at a new club on the east side of Houston (actually, Crosby, TX). Tonight. In about 4 hours. So I quickly changed clothes and started my 3-1/2 hour drive through a storm to the club!

I arrived and met up with Steve Dakin and Dean Madonia (both are great players who I just met tonight), and along with Charlie the house drummer, we rocked the grand opening of the new piano bar in Crosby! Good show!

AJ's Ale House NB 9/19/13

Nia served the AJ's crowd their drinks tonight in New Braunfels, TX while I performed a solo piano show, where I tried my best to play everyone's requests. The Police, the Muppets, Neil Young, and Men Without Hats were all requested. Some of my favorite fans were in the crowd, and I even made a couple of new fans! Thanks to everyone for a great show!

Superfly's 9/19/13

A little bit of rain never hurt anyone, and the crowds turned up for the Gents show even though it was pouring down! We performed an hour long set at our continuing record-shop-in-store performance. I had to leave right at 8 PM to make it to my second show of the evening, but the Gents were still playing an encore when I left! This blog entry will probably be online before they've even packed up.

Superfly's 9/18/13

DanHolmesGroup rocked Superfly's in San Marcos, TX tonight! It was a rock-solid hour of original tunes, and I couldn't be more pleased with the way the band sounded. It's been a crazy couple of weeks, and this show was a great reminder of how fortunate I am to be playing with Chris Wallis, Kevin Humphrey and Ian Lee. Those guys are so talented.

Saxon Pub 9/17/13

The Hill Country Gentlemen took the stage at midnight in Austin, TX tonight. We played an hour-long set of our tunes. Clay, Jeremiah, Kevin, Troy and I locked in together, and I enjoyed my first show back in Texas after retuning from Indiana this past weekend!

Zydeco's 9/14/13

This was our second of two shows today, and what a perfect way to end our short tour in Indiana! Zydeco's in Mooresville is my home-away-from-home, and it was an unbelievably good time tonight performing with DHG. Kevin and Steve locked in to make a solid rhythm section, and Cory Pitre played guitar over my piano like the two of us had grown up playing these tunes together. Later in the evening, good friend and great bassist, Jack Joseph, sat in with us for a couple of tunes, which was a real treat. Besides the great music, I was so happy to spend some time with a bunch of family and friends who had come out to watch the show (including guitarist Jake Hahn who used to perform with DHG before I moved to Texas). Kevin had a chance to try jambalaya for the first time tonight, and he loved it. Thanks to Deb and Carter for having us! I miss you guys!

Lakeview Manor 9/14/13

Lakeview Manor in Indianapolis, IN was the first of our two shows today. Kevin Humphrey and I performed for about an hour for the residents, and they sang along to our tunes. They really enjoyed some early rock tunes, like Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis, plus some standards for them to sing. Kevin even had a chance to duck-walk while we played Chuck Berry! My 103 year old grandmother was in attendance, and she had some great things to say. My favorite? "You look exactly like yourself."

Slippery Noodle Inn 9/13/13

Kevin Humphrey and I headed to downtown Indianapolis, IN and met up with Steve Brunner and Cory Pitre for our second of two Friday the 13th shows. The bar was hopping as we started off the night at the world-famous blues club. The music was fantastic as it poured from each of us like a tall drink! I had an absolutely great time performing with Cory, Steve and Kevin! Thanks goes out to everybody at the Noodle for another fun show!

SUMC Childcare 9/13/13

The first of two Friday 13th shows today with Kevin Humphrey took place at Speedway United Methodist Church Childcare in Speedway, Indiana. The kids danced and clapped and whistled through our 45 minute show of tunes from Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Cookie Monster and Spongebob. It was Kevin's first experience with the kids, and he danced along with them! After we finished, almost every child gave us each "high fives" and left happy. I like the audience at the daycare. They're so energetic!
Thanks goes out to my wife Christine for taking photos for me!

Flatwater Restaurant 9/12/13

Fantastic night for an outdoor show tonight in Broad Ripple, Indiana! DHG (including Kevin Humphrey and Steve Brunner) laid down some great grooves for the friendly people while they enjoyed dinner. It was extra-special for me because not only did I get to perform with two great musicians all night, but because my sister and brother-in-law were there with many members of my family to celebrate their marriage, so a big congrats goes out to them! I'm proud of my big sis and I'm glad we came up to see them.

Also in the crowd were lots of my high school friends and teachers, and it was great getting a chance to talk with them in person again. After the show, bassist Kevin, brother J, wife Christine and my parents all headed back to my parents' house to grab some shut eye before another big day tomorrow!

Saxon Pub 9/10/13

I drove up to Austin, Texas tonight to play another fun show with The Hill Country Gentlemen tonight. We performed for about an hour and 15 minutes to a late-night audience. We all took turns singing our favorite tunes, and the band sounded great. At 1:30 AM, I found myself thinking about tomorrow's drive to (just north of) Memphis, Tennessee. I have to be up by 6 AM. Uhgg.

Doyle Convention Center 9/7/13

I drove to Texas City, Texas to perform a Piano-Show-To-Go with David Lee tonight for Houston's Howl At The Moon. The event was a fundraiser for Seaman's Center of Texas City, and the event went great! David is an excellent player and I enjoyed performing across the piano from him. Everyone there was extremely nice, and they all told us at the end of the night how much they enjoyed the performance. They said they'd like to have us back again! It made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

AJ's Ale House NB 9/6/13

Vince Mejia drummed for the people while I played piano tonight in New Baunfels, TX. Lots of requests were laid on my piano throughout the evening, and lots of people left happy. As a matter of fact, I only saw one person leave unhappy, and it was because the man she arrived with didn't leave with her. Oops.

AJ's Ale House NB 9/5/13

My request piano show in New Braunfels tonight was slower than usual, but the people who were there had a good time. From Tom Waits to Journey, I played them all! My favorite comment of the night came from a woman (who I'm sure was younger than me) tell me that I was probably too young to know who Counting Crows were, and then asked for Robin Thicke.

Superfly's 9/5/13

Before playing with the Hill Country Gentlemen at Superfly's in San Marcos this evening, I was recording Ian Lee and his guitar for my new project. He sounded great, as usual, and between takes, we began to talk about the upcoming gig. I was happy to find out that he was going to bring his fiddle and sit in with Kevin, Troy, Clay, Jeremiah and me tonight. The show sounded great, but it was a small crowd I think mostly due to the threat of rain. The Gents will return next week, but Kevin and I will be in Indianapolis performing.

Saxon Pub 9/3/13

Ian Lee (fiddle) joined the Hill Country Gentlemen onstage last night in Austin, TX at the world famous Saxon Pub. We will be performing there every Tuesday night in September, just before midnight. It's a cool venue with great sound and lights, so catch us there if you can. The people in the crowd seemed to enjoy themselves almost as much as I enjoyed performing for them. See you next week, Saxonites!

Jack's Roadhouse 9/2/13

Happy Labor Day! Our last Monday night show at Jack's in San Marcos was cool because we had several friends come out to listen, and Doc (saxophone) sat in for a few tunes. The fellas never let me down for solid grooves and great solos, and Doc fell right in with the groove. Thanks to Floyd and Jamie and all the staff at Jack's for a long, fun run of shows. We'll be back for some weekend shows soon!

The White Horse 9/1/13

What a great way to start September! DHG played our first gig at the cool east Austin club know as the White Horse. From 9p-10:30p, we got down and played some fun and funky New Orleans grooves, then at 11p, the Urban Achievers Brass Band took the stage and lit the crowd up even more! Chris Wallis was super-groovy tonight on the drums. He made sure our record didn't skip. Kevin Humphrey and Ian Lee both had a zap of energy just as we took the stage, and it made people wanna dance. These are the kind of shows I really enjoy!

Triple Crown 8/31/13

Jeremiah, Clay, Troy, Kevin and I performed (right after the Shady Rest Band) tonight in San Marcos, TX at Triple Crown. We had a good crowd, and I felt good about the band's show. Four of us took turns singing some lead while Clay held down the beats, and the people in the crowd danced without caution. All we need now is a booking agent to get us more shows!
